Snow Emergency Thanks!

January 14, 2014

Thank you to our campus facilities services, emergency management, housing & residence life, and police colleagues!

The significant snowfall and historically low temperatures last week disrupted the lives of more than a million people. While the campus was “closed” for safety reasons, many of our colleagues were needed on campus. Whether it was ensuring those students who were living on campus remained safe, clearing the streets and sidewalks for safe passage or maintaining order and responding to emergencies, our colleagues in campus facilities services, emergency management and continuity, housing and residential life, and the police department, were at work. We owe them all our thanks for challenging service.

Here are just some of the amazing things that occurred on campus in recent days during brutal weather conditions:

  • Campus Facilities: Recorded more than 5,700 man-hours, including one supervisor who worked more than 32 hours straight. Cleared 20 miles of sidewalks and an additional 20 miles of streets, not to mention dozens of parking lots and garage tops.
  • Emergency Management and Continuity: Operated on 12-hour shifts from Saturday through Wednesday, providing key updates to campus personnel and leadership, in addition to issuing IU Notify alerts to the entire campus community.
  • Housing and Residence Life: HRL facilities staff put in more than 100 hours in overtime, doing everything from removing snow to repairing water damage.

Residence Life staff sent emails, posted fliers and used social media to alert on-campus residents of the bad weather and its emergency plan for water damage and power loss. The Housing Operations team came in to implement the emergency plan, relocating several students.

  • IU Police Department: Put in more than 750 hours over a 4-day stretch last week and worked hand-in-hand with Emergency Management & Continuity.

On behalf of the entire administration and campus community, I want to once again say “thank you” to these colleagues and Executive Vice Chancellor Nasser Paydar and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Administration Gabrielle Bovenzi.
