Student achievement celebrated
May 5, 2015
"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."
-- William Butler Yeats
Since I became chancellor 12 years ago, Mother’s Day has held an additional meaning for me: IUPUI Commencement Day. This is the time of the year we celebrate student achievement.
The Class of 2015 consists of 6,547 proud graduates. They will receive 6,633 degrees:
- 121 associate degrees.
- 4,077 bachelor’s degrees.
- 1,578 master’s degrees.
- 765 doctoral degrees -- practice.
- 92 doctoral degrees -- research.
The two largest ceremonies will be held on Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 10, while the schools of medicine, dentistry and law will have a ceremony on Saturday, May 9. In addition, many schools host recognition events this weekend.
The commitment of our students whose accomplishments entail years of work is impressive. Talking with the graduates-to-be, I am struck by their energy, their commitment and their appreciation for the IUPUI experience.
As we celebrate the IUPUI Class of 2015 and their future, let us also thank our colleagues -- IUPUI faculty and staff -- who have been partners with our graduates.
This commencement is my final opportunity as chancellor to congratulate you on your wonderful achievement, and to say to you all that I hope your partnership with the faculty created a profound and lasting learning experience that you will call upon for the rest of your lives. All the best in your future endeavors!
