Campus engagement honored
June 2, 2015
“Our value is not measured in the currency and possessions in our coffers, but rather in the consistency and progression in our character.” -- Terry Crouson.
IUPUI has again been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition that a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteerism, service learning and civic engagement. This year IUPUI is recognized twice -- once to the “honor roll with distinction” for our general community service and once to the “honor roll” for education.
The award acknowledges tremendous work and engagement on the part of faculty, staff and students in Indianapolis, throughout the state, across the nation and internationally. I congratulate and appreciate every member of the IUPUI family whose individual commitment enhances the profile of this campus.
The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll recognizes institutions of higher education that support exemplary community service programs and raise the visibility of effective practices in campus community partnerships.
The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) administers the annual Honor Roll award citing colleges and universities for their impact on issues from poverty and homelessness to health and environmental justice; working in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the American Council on Education, Campus Compact and the Interfaith Youth Core.
I was thrilled to be present with our colleagues Bob Bringle and Julie Hatcher when we received our very first President’s Award and I am extraordinarily proud IUPUI has been recognized with an Honor Roll, Honor Roll with distinction, or Finalist every year since. IUPUI has demonstrated a consistent commitment to significant community engagement.
Honorees are chosen based on a series of factors, including the scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service learning courses.
IUPUI continues to distinguish itself as a campus that enriches student learning through educationally meaningful engagement experiences. The Presidential Honor Roll recognizes the breadth and depth of those opportunities, and the fact that IUPUI students are civically engaged in ways that develop habits of the heart as well as the mind.
