United Way campaign kicks off for fall 2016
September 20, 2016
Offices and units from throughout campus filled the tables at the United Way kickoff luncheon Sept. 13.
United Way support for community agencies is serious business, but those attending the luncheon had time for some fun, too! Each table had a theme; they were as varied as a luau and a construction zone.
Campus "celebrities" acted as servers for the luncheon, working hard to earn tips from their guests. Jay Gladden, dean of the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management, standing, served his table well. All server tips from the afternoon were donated directly to United Way.
Workers and attendees alike were all smiles during the event at the Campus Center, including Kim Kirkland, director of the Office of Equal Opportunity.
Dean John Williams of the School of Dentistry paused from his work in the "construction zone" for a quick picture with guests at his table.
Representatives from United Way-supported organizations were on hand to discuss their services with attendees.
The table served by Mark Volpatti, of the Office of Finance and Administration, was decorated with a "fall harvest" theme, including nonperishable food for donation.
Guests were given information sheets about organizations that benefit from United Way contributions. Those who visited the groups' displays and got their sheet filled out were entered to win a fabulous door prize.
The fun continued! Chancellor Nasser Paydar, middle, posed for a selfie with featured guests Rafael Sanchez of WRTV, left, and Rafael Sanchez, the president of IPL, right. The two Sanchezes are United Way of Central Indiana's community engagement co-chairs and put on quite a presentation, which included light-up gold shoes on the reporter.
Chancellor Paydar spoke to the crowd, with the trophy for the winner of the highest tip on proud display beside him.
