Staff and students spent a day off giving back
January 24, 2017
IUPUI students took part in MLK Jr. Day of Service at the Athenaeum Theatre.
This day of service, held annually, honors the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
Luckily for these students, the weather was mild compared to January's average temperatures.
Service projects tasked students to work together as well as on their own.
An added bonus to participating in the MLK Jr. Day of Service? Discovering some of Indianapolis' historic buildings and the stories behind them.
Participants arrived at the IUPUI Campus Center in the morning to receive group assignments. Groups kept busy until early afternoon with the tasks at hand.
Hundreds of IUPUI students, faculty and staff joined community members to volunteer together at sites across Indianapolis as a way to honor Dr. King's commitment to service and social justice.
The nature of volunteering varied from site to site. At the Athenaeum Theatre, students were asked to deep-clean the building.
IUPUI junior John Carter Kellum offered a helping hand on the theater's grand staircase.
The group's mission of the day was to preserve the cultural history at the Athenaeum Theater.
