IUPUI students, faculty and staff asked to learn what it's like to be a SNAP participant

October 15, 2013

SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, helps millions of low-income Americans every year. However, people are still struggling to put food on the table.

The average SNAP benefit in 2012 was $1.50 per person, per meal. Faculty, staff and students can see what it's like to live in their shoes by taking part in the SNAP Challenge.

For one week, challenge particpants will live on the equivalent of the average SNAP benefit given to millions of Americans each month. That's about $31.50 per week.

Particpants can then document their experience which will be a part of a documentary that will be shown during Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week at IUPUI.

Sign up is online. Anyone with questions may contact Joe Spaulding, this year's coordinator for Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, at josspaul@iupui.edu.
