With IUPUI's 50th anniversary coming soon, the campus community is invited to share ideas and opinions on how to celebrate

November 2, 2016

IUPUI will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its founding in 2018-19, and Chancellor Nasser H. Paydar wants the occasion to make its mark on the community with a series of signature events.

As he mentioned in Tuesday's State of the Campus address, he is counting on help from the entire campus community to make the event special.

To encourage that assistance, the Office of the Chancellor has established a 50th Anniversary Celebration site for people to share their thoughts, memories and ideas.

"We want this to be an inspiring celebration that honors our campus’s history and recognizes all of those who have a role in shaping this institution," Paydar said. "I want to thank our outstanding students who gathered at North Hall last month to share some amazing ideas, and I look forward to the continuing conversation under the leadership of Becky Porter and Simon Rhodes."

An IUPUI@50 Steering Committee will help shepherd the events that will comprise the celebration. The co-chairs of that group are Rebecca Porter, interim dean of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, and Simon Rhodes, dean of the School of Science.

The goals of the 50th anniversary are:

  • Chronicle, Document and Explore -- The campus wants to outline IUPUI's positive aspects as well as how it has handled more-difficult periods.
  • Celebrate and Recognize -- IUPUI wants to celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of faculty, staff, students and alumni throughout the past 50 years.
  • Inspire and Engage -- The 50th anniversary should inspire and engage students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, community members and peers through signature events, commissioned works of art, special lectures and other activities that will be part of the celebration. We want to strengthen, rediscover and create new campus traditions that help distinguish IUPUI from other urban campuses.

The steering committee was appointed in September and includes faculty and staff, students, alumni, the community and ex officio members.

The committee will provide a report to Chancellor Paydar by Dec. 23. Then, one or more committees will advise and oversee implementation of the recommendations that are approved.
