Following another exemplary year in which the team demonstrated excellence both inside the classroom and in the area of competition, two members of the IUPUI volleyball team earned a pair of spots on the Academic All-League team, as announced by the Summit League office Dec. 7. Kori Waelbroeck and Logan Walling were named to the roster of six and were the only selections to maintain a GPA of 4.0.
Waelbroeck finished the 2016 season with a team-high 389 kills, averaging a Summit League third-best 3.54 kills per set. She added 239 digs and 79 total blocks, earning All-Summit League honors for the second consecutive season. A right-side hitter, Waelbroeck is majoring in community health and twice has been named a Distinguished Scholar honoree. She recorded career highs in virtually every statistical category during her junior season and is one of four third-year players likely to return for 2017.
Walling reached historic heights for the Jags this past season, as the Normal, Illinois, native became the Jags' all-time blocks leader. She finished her career with 425 total blocks, absolutely obliterating the old record of 375. This past season, she logged 217 kills and 96 total blocks; her 27 solo blocks led the Summit League. The middle blocker has been named a Summit League Distinguished Scholar three times. An elementary education major, Walling earned the Academic All-League nod for the second consecutive year. She has also garnered a pair of Summit League Player of the Week awards during her career.
To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3, completed at least one full academic year at their current institution and participated in 50 percent of their team's competitions. The volleyball All-League team is made up of the six student-athletes receiving the most votes with all ties standing.
The Jags finished the 2016 season 12-20, going 8-8 in Summit League play. The team advanced to its fifth-straight Summit League Tournament, falling to North Dakota State in the first round. Head Coach Steve Payne completed his 20th season with the Jags and is not only the most tenured member of the IUPUI athletics staff, but has coached in the Summit League for longer than any other volleyball coach.
